THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

4/30/2021

Beware of the negative ways of giving: giving others worries, giving others sadness, giving others embarrassment and giving others problems. - Hsing Yun

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

People should work, but work is not all there is to life. Life is not just working for material wealth or for satisfaction of material desires. One should work for the sake of one/s mental and physical health and for the opportunity to render service to others with a grateful heart. - Sheng Yen

Making a living takes very little. It only becomes a problem when you want to live like someone else. - Sadhguru

YOGA AND MEDITATION SESSIONS INCREASINGLY OFFERED AT AIRPORTS

4/27/2021

The South China Post is reporting an increase in yoga and meditation sessions for stressed out travelers who's anxieties tend to be higher because of the pandemic.  Some airports provide the services of a counselor.  Here are two examples:

*  Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport -  Robin Hancock, a nature meditation guide, gently plays a steel tongue drum with a pair of mallets, producing soothing notes that blend with the soft sound of chirping birds and bubbling creeks pouring from a Bluetooth speaker. It's a 20 minute session.

 *  Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, - hosts the world's largest inter-faith chapel.  “No doubt, the pandemic has accelerated the need for our services to a new level,” says the Rev Greg McBrayer.McBrayer, an Anglican priest, and the corporate chaplain for American Airlines and director of the interfaith chapel.  . During the pandemic, he says, he has seen depression, anxiety and addiction increase among the travelers and workers served by him and his staff of 20 chaplains.  “We have encountered a tremendous amount of grief and fear,” McBrayer says, especially among airport employees. In the past year, he logged more than 300 counseling sessions via Zoom and more in person.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

A cheerful person is a true public benefactor.
He gladdens the hearts of all. The contagion
of cheer transforms depression into brightness,
sickness into health. A cheery word gives joy
to others. - Swami Sivananda

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

4/26/2021

A travel guide cannot force us to make the journey – he or she can only indicate the way. We have to get ourselves to the airport and on the plane. Just so, the Buddha cannot force us to practice. He gives the teachings and shows by his example how to do it, but we have to do it ourselves. - Thuibten Chodron

WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT ZEN . . .

4/25/2021

Perhaps the most recognizable style of silent meditation is known as Zen and "imported" to the West from Japan.  However, the same silent style has different names in various countries.  Zen in Japan is Chan in China, Thien in Vietnam and Son in Korea.  This distinctive style first emerged in China more than 1500 years ago.  Whatever the name, the goal is identical in all traditions:  to live out a life of compassion and wisdom.

You have a whole menagerie within you – the lion, the tiger, the serpent, the elephant, the ape, the peacock. Bring them under your control. - Swmai Sivananda

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING IN THE WORLD IS . . .

4/24/2021

After acknowledging that many people would answer this question by saying the mountains, the oceans, nature, the stars at night, etc., modern Chinese Buddhist master Hsing Yun offers his response: “The most beautiful sign in this world is a brilliant smile. However, there are people who are reluctant to smile. Their face is stretched tight just like a dead person. Who would like to get close to a dead person? A smile shows a courteous and friendly demeanor coupled with love and warmth. A smile is an international language. A smile is not differentiated by age. The young and the elderly can both smile.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The experiences that cause you to fear are actually useful to you. They are directed at your weakest areas. The experience comes to you so you can use your courage to overcome the fear, thereby strengthening your weak area. - Wu Wei
