THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

2/28/2021

Everything we do sets off a wave pattern that spreads slowly into all directions. Whenever we harm or insult another, that person carries a karmic tension in the mind which waits for an object on which to unleash itself. - Glenn H. Mullin

PLANT BASED MEAT FIRST DEVELOPED IN CHINA CENTURIES AGO

2/27/2021

Food and Wine magazine recently published an article on the history of "fake" meat which is plant based.  While vegetarian meats are not thriving in the West, that is a recently acquired taste which is growing due to more people adopting a vegetarian diet.  The Food and Wine article reports this history of vegetarian options for pork, chicken, fish, beef:
  • Faux meat was first intended for those transitioning from meat to a vegetarianism;
  • Vegetarianism was formally adopted by Chinese sects of Buddhism in the 6th century, upon an edict by Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty who urged monastics to stop eating meat;
  • By the 13th century, faux meat emerged as a specialty offered to guests visiting monasteries;
  • Faux "animals" came to be offered by those who practiced ancient folk religions which required the sacrifice of animals to appease deities;
  • Though vegetarian meat is now offered buy large Western companies and could be considered "cultural appropriation" Asians are pleased with this feeling that it doesn't matter who created it, as long as it's saving animals. The goal is the same.

A LESSON IN GRATITUDE . . . FROM THE BUDDHA

2/26/2021

According to tradition, after the Buddha was enlightened he spent the next seven days just looking at the tree which gave him shelter and under which his awakening emerged. Take a moment to understand what he did. Rather than rush off, start teaching and sharing his life changing insights with others, the Buddha took an entire week to sit in gratitude before a tree which meant so much to him. From the Buddha we get a glimpse of how important it is to pause and feel gratitude. Pause to examine your own mind by asking these questions of yourself:
  • Do I feel gratitude for simply being alive?
  • Do I feel gratitude that I have discovered meditation?
  • Do I feel gratitude that I have people I can meditate with?
  • Do I feel gratitude for spiritual friends who journey through life with me?
  • Do I feel gratitude that I have enough money for my needs?
  • Do I feel gratitude that I have spiritual teachers to instruct and inspire me?
Periodically engaging in this 'gratitude feeling' exercise will ensure that we don't take for granted the many positives which are constantly present in our lives.

"DO NOT SQUANDER YOUR LIFE"

2/24/2021

The following is traditionally recited at many Zen Temples before a period of meditation.  It's a reminder to use time - not "kill" time:

Let me respectfully remind you,

Life and Death are of extreme importance.
Time passes swiftly by, and opportunity is lost.
Each of you should strive to awaken, awaken.
Take heed . . do not squander your lives.

Criticism does not give you the right to abandon a commitment. - Swami Radha

WHAT YOU HAVE IN COMMON WITH JESUS AND BUDDHA

2/23/2021

"I take it literally when the New Testament says, “Ask and you will receive, knock and the door will be opened.” It’s that simple. You will know every secret about life when you can truly say I must know. I can’t wait a moment longer. Buddha sitting under the Bodhi tree and Jesus wrestling with demons in the desert are symbolic of the same drama of the soul that you were born to repeat. Never doubt this."
- Deepak Chopra

Our body has a most profound relationship with us in this life; it can even affect our many future lifetimes, and thus should be cherished. - Hsing Yun
