Yoga is always done barefoot because our feet need air and sensory stimulation. Shoes are considered a 'torture chamber' by yoga instructors. Here's what yoga pioneer Richard Hittleman says about the wearing of shoes:
"We must also say a word about the torture chambers in which the feet of most workers are encased during the workday. These are e known as 'shoes'. There is no doubt that most shoes have a damaging effect on the feet...It is best to walk without shoes as much as possible in your home and barefoot in your garden, in the country and at the beach."
