The yogis of ancient India lived close to nature and saw spiritual concepts embodied all around them. It's hardly surprising they gave the name vrksasana (tree pose) to one of the classical balancing postures. Poised between the solidity of the earth and the free expanse of sky, a big, healthy tree is a magnificent example of balance. A mature, balanced tree can survive the wind and the rain because its trunk and roots are strong and resolute while its branches and leaves remain receptive and accommodating. - John Friend
