WHAT JANE FONDA SAID ABOUT YOGA IN 1994

6/17/2018

One of the world's best known and most enduring actors is Jane Fonda.  In addition to her film and television work, Fonda has been instrumental in promoting exercise via a series of tapes and DVDs.  In 1994, she released her first yoga "tape" and was interviewed about it by Yoga Journal.  Here are four thoughts about yoga she shared at that time:

1.  Proper breath work is crucial.  "When in doubt breathe. Yogis say if we can control our breath we can control our life."

2.  She was drawn to yoga by others who appeared calm and content.  "Whenever I meet someone who does yoga well and regularly, they have a grace about them, a centeredness.  I wanted some of that."

3.  Her yoga tape is introductory and for the sedentary population.  "Obviously, for an advanced yoga person, my tape is not enough.  But there are so many people who don't do any exercise, and they'll never do aerobics.  This is a general way to get them to become aware of their body.  Maybe that will encourage them to go forward - but even if they don't go any further than that, they'll feel great when the tape is over."

4.  A focus on the physical aspect can lead one to the spiritual side of yoga.    "I think one of the reasons Yoga hasn't become more popular sooner in America is that people view it as a spiritual trip they have to take and they may not be ready to do that.  But I also think that through focusing on the breath, you can enter another place which can become spiritual, even though you're not thinking of it that way."
