Nirvana means “to cool” or “to extinguish” suggesting it is a state where the sources of suffering have been cooled and extinguished. It is not a place but a state of consciousness and is characterized by deep peace, great wisdom and freedom from attachments and aversions. It is the opposite of greed, anger, clinging, grasping and pursuit of external happiness. Nirvana eludes a simple definition but can be described as a joyous state of freedom.
