The Buddha is the awakened ideal; the Dharma is the method of awakening, and the Sangha is the community of those who are trying to awaken together. These are also considered places of refuge because they offer shelter and safety when one experiences the troubles and trials of life.
Though there are varieties of Buddhism around the world, there are always the same three foundations called the “Three Jewels.” They are often recited before group meditation and other assemblies – I take refuge in the Buddha, I take refuge in the Dharma, I take refuge in the Sangha.
