This new study suggests that consuming these increases the long-term risk of colon cancer as they can increase the inflammation in the body. The study was based on data compiled from 121,000 people and found that those who ate the most inflammatory foods were 37 per cent more likely to develop colon cancer, and 70 per cent more likely to develop rectal cancer compared with those who had the lowest inflammation diet score. The study also revealed that green leafy vegetables, dark yellow vegetables, whole grains, coffee and fruit juice appeared to reduce inflammation, and people appeared to achieve the greatest anti-inflammatory effect from their healthy diet if they also refrained from alcohol.
The diet recommended by researchers is essentially a yogic one - vegetarian and avoiding processed foods and alcohol.
