Saturday as I taught a yoga class a group of young girls entered room and politely asked if we were interested in buying Girl Scout Cookies. As class was in session, we couldn't stop to respond. However, after class I was surprised by the consensus which came from the women yoginis: girl scout cookies are very unhealthy. All the women said they did support girl scouts by making a purchase but they considered the purchase a donation as they tossed out the cookies. Full of fat and sugar, the cookies are baked months before they're ever sold were just a few of the concerns expressed. In fact, one woman felt the girl scout cookie program was at odds with the stated Girl Scouts' healthy living initiative.
While this program is an effective fund raiser and has a long tradition, times change. With more awareness of healthy eating and balanced diets, the Girl Scout Association leadership could do better for girls by having them offer healthier items for public consumption.
