"IT'S NOT POSSIBLE TO MEDITATE ALL DAY" . . . SO HERE ARE SOME IDEAS FOR MORE SPIRITUAL GROWTH4/9/2020
It is not possible to meditate the whole day. Without variety, the mind, especially of a beginner, will get tired . It is necessary to guard against this possibility. It is important that the aspirant should be protected from the monotony of one-sided spiritual practice leading to reaction and a return to worldly activity with a vengeance. The beauty of divine life lies in the fact that the seriousness of meditation is tempered with the joy of Kirtan, the happiness and strength of service, the peace of Japa and the understanding of Svadhyaya (reading of scriptures). - Swami Sivananda
If you have a bad temper and a foul mouth, then no matter how good your heart is, you are not a good person. - Cheng Yen
1. Prevent negative states of mind.
2. Overcome negative states of mind. 3. Cultivate positive states of mind. 4. Maintain positive states of mind. If you’re experiencing deep anticipatory grief about the state of the world these days, it’s not hard to figure out why. We are living in an age of intense violence, fake virtue, and rampant delusion. - John Harvey Negru
Wherever the Buddha is present, every city, town, and village is blessed by his virtues. The whole country reposes in peace and harmony. The sun and moon shine with pure brilliance; wind arises and rain falls at the right time.
There is no calamity or epidemic, and so the country becomes wealthy and the people enjoy peace. Soldiers and weapons become useless, and people esteem virtue, practice benevolence, and diligently cultivate courteous modesty. —Buddha Shakyamuni, The Larger Pure Land Sutra Think not lightly of good, saying, 'It will not come to me.' Drop by drop is the water pot filled. Likewise, the wise one, gathering it little by little, fills oneself with good. - Dhammapada 9.122
We must all face the reality that we have no control over birth, old age, illness, and death.
- Taitetsu Unno A recent study published in the Journal of Neurology supports the tradtional yogic diet - which is vegetarian ( that means no meat including fish). Here is what researchers concluded: "People who eat a diet rich in nuts, vegetables and soy may have a lower risk of stroke than those who eat meat and fish."
Here's another thought: I often hear from people who want to meditate and do yoga regularly but just can't establish the routine or generate the discipline. It makes me wonder if their diet (almost always non-vegetarian or semi-vegetarian) is getting in the way. Without exception serious yogis and meditators have embraced a completely vegetarian diet. Consider this Vedic insight: How can he practice true compassion who eats the flesh of an animal to fatten his own flesh? - Tirukural 251 Whatever you may fail to guard, guard well your tongue, for flawed speech unfailingly invokes anguish and affliction. - Tirukural – 127
