QUICK FACTS AND QUOTES ABOUT HINDU HERITAGE MONTH:
* First celebration of Hindu Heritage was in October 2013; * October is designated Hindu Heritage month because it is the birth month of Mahatma Gandhi; * October is often when major Hindu holidays such as Navaratri and Diwali are celebrated' * It is a global movement highlighting Vedic traditions, teachings and the many contributions Hinduism has made to the world; * More and more people in the West are drawn to this ancient faith. Here's why: "Hindu philosophy is free from the missionary compulsion to bring the whole world into its fold in a kind of spiritual colonialism and cultural invasion. This latter form of conversion, which has gone on in India for centuries, ever since Muslims and Christians discovered the subcontinent, has seriously disrupted communities, turned son against father, wife against husband, friend against friend. Coupled with the enticement of material gain and destruction of ancient traditions, it has destroyed lives. The Hindu form of preaching does none of this, and ironically this nonintrusive attitude itself is bringing many toward Hinduism.” - Sivaya Subramuniya Invite beliefs that are different from the ones you hold and try to see beyond your own filter. Purposely experiment past the boundaries of your taste. Examine approaches you may dismiss. - Rick Rubin
There are times when it is hard to believe in the future, when we are temporarily just not brave enough. When this happens, concentrate on the present. Cultivate le petit bonheur (the little happiness) until courage returns. Look forward to the beauty of the next moment, the next hour, the promise of a good meal, sleep, a book, a movie, the likelihood that tonight the stars will shine and tomorrow the sun will shine. Sink roots into the present until the strength grows to think about tomorrow. ― Ardis Whitman
Buddha is the Sanskrit word for “awakened one.” It was initially applied as an honor upon Siddhartha Gautama, the Indian prince who renounced power and privilege to seek enlightenment. The term is more general and refers to any being highly awakened. “Anyone who is peaceful, loving and understanding can be called a buddha,” notes Thich Nhat Hanh. ‘There were many buddhas in the past, there are buddhas in the present moment, and there will be many buddhas in the future. Buddha is not the name of a particular person; buddha is just a common name to designate anyone who has a high degree of peace and who has a high degree of understanding and compassion. All of us are capable of being called by this name,” he explains.
Between the mind and the body, there is something that can serve as a bridge. The moment you begin to practice mindful breathing, your body and your mind begin to come together with one another. It takes only ten to twenty seconds to accomplish this miracle called oneness of body and mind. - Thich Nhat Hanh
There is no such thing as a conflict that can’t be ended. . . . Conflicts are created, conducted, and sustained by human beings. They can be ended by human beings. - George Mitchell
