Buddhism is categorized as a world religion, but the Buddha was not a prophet. He did not promise to save anybody, and he openly proclaimed that God, as understood in his day as Brahma, the creator, was not able to do so either. Instead, he said people could save themselves from suffering by learning about their own nature and understanding their reality as relational beings. - Robert Thurman
A recent study examined the effects of sound meditation, specifically Tibetan singing bowl meditation, on mood, anxiety, pain, and spiritual well-being. Sixty-two women and men, average age 49.7 years, participated. The results are fascinating . . . As compared with meditation, following the sound meditation participants reported significantly less tension, anger, fatigue, and depressed mood Additionally, participants who were previously inexperienced with this type of meditation experienced a significantly greater reduction in tension compared with participants experienced in this meditation. Feeling of spiritual well-being significantly increased across all participants. Researchers concluded that Tibetan singing bowl meditation may be a "feasible low-cost low technology intervention for reducing feelings of tension, anxiety, and depression, and increasing spiritual well-being" and is especially useful in decreasing tension in individuals who have no experience with singing bowls and sound baths. Sound bath here at the studio is this Friday (8/25) 6:30 - 8 pm. public domain photo from www.pixabay.com
Buddhism is not built upon theism, but instead upon understanding the true nature of reality. So those who cannot force themselves to believe in God can find a spiritual sanctuary and feel that there is another path to transcendence. Many Western Buddhists come to Buddhism because, among other reasons, they have a desire to find a spiritual path that gives meaning to life, but they cannot accept the doctrine of a god. - Anam Thubten
I have spoken of people who were eminent in one way or another. But in actual fact I have been quite so often impressed by mend and women of no eminence. What I have found most unforgettable is a certain kind of moral quality, a quality of self-righteousness, whether in private live, in public affairs, or in the pursuit of truth.

Health outweighs all other blessings so much that one may really say that a healthy beggar is happier than a sick king - Arthur Schopenhauer
The Buddha founded the sangha as an educational system to help people develop the wisdom to free themselves from suffering. - Robert Thurman
Do not detest the arising of thoughts or stop the thoughts that arise. Just realize that your original mind is beyond thought. —Bankei Yotaku
Some Americans on the political right have a utopian vision of turning their country into Christendom. But there is perhaps a greater possibility of seeing people living in a secular human colony on Mars than seeing the United States become a wholly Christian country, as it used to be in the 1800s. - Anam Thubten
(public domain image from www.pixabay.com) Yoga provides a more effective way of stretching and lengthening muscles for three reasons. First, a yoga workout generates body heat and a hot body enables the muscles to stretch more readily. Secondly, when people stretch, they usually do so for a few minutes at most. Yoga classes typically last from an hour to an hour and one half. During most of that time, the muscles are constantly being stretched and lengthened. Thirdly, yoga brings mind and body together through awareness and breath. This empowers you to remain mindful, focused, balanced, stable, and centered in the practice. Stretching is simply a physical activity to relieve muscles. |
