Manhood is the opposite of childhood. A child is self-centered, fearful, and dependent. A man is bold, courageous, respectful, independent and of service to others. - Brett McKay
A buddha is an enlightened sentient being, while an ordinary being is an unenlightened buddha. For an enlightened buddha, his mind-nature in the form of “light” is perfectly and completely “recovered,” and he has the capacity to enlighten sentient beings by uncovering their original mind-nature. - Alan Kwan
In simple terms, karma is the way one thing leads to another. It’s how the past creates the present and, perhaps more importantly, how the present creates the future. - Peter Moretzsohn
Faith is precious.
Devotion is blessing. Renunciation is victory. Mindfulness is protection. Compassion is the essence of Dharma. Love is the root of beneficial activity. Generosity is wealth. Discipline is power. Patience is composure. Learning is luminosity. Contemplation is purification. Diligence is joyful practice. Meditation is realization. - Khenpo Choga Rinpoche Pride is an obstacle.
Doubt is weakness. Fear is delusion. Anger is hellish. Jealousy is vile. Greed is disease. Miserliness is hunger. Selfishness is violence. Laziness is poison. Worry is useless. Guilt is self-immolation. Negative thinking is suffering. —Khenpo Choga Rinpoche HARVARD UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS CONCLUDE YOGA STRONGLY IMPROVES LIFE QUALITY IN OLDER ADULTS5/16/2023
Researchers at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital and other collaborators reviewed 33 studies, which included 2,384 participants over 65 in order to determine how yoga benefits that population.
Not surprisingly, the results strongly revealed that a consistent yoga practice improves life quality in these ways:
Researchers also noted that these all contribute to life longevity whereas their opposites shorten life span. For example, slower walking speed is an indicator of higher risk death in older adults. For quite some time, the only portraits of activism I had were Dr. King and Malcolm X. Marches, rallies, sit-ins – holy embodiments that should be respected deeply, for they protect and guide us today. But the first time I picked up James Baldwin, I finally saw myself. It occurred to me that I could be an activist from my own source of power—words. - Cole Arthur Riley
Keep learning to recognize the difference between true equanimity and its false cousins, indifference and apathy. - Oren Jay Sofer
A calm and detached mind always has a greater ability to achieve its goals. - David Frawley
Finally, I had to not be afraid of the word God, which often comes up in recovery programs. I had to cultivate the humility to accept things that my intellectual pride might have rejected. For someone who had turned her will and her life over to the care of alcohol, it seemed a little hypocritical to think that I couldn’t get sober if I had to be in a room where people say that word. The word God simply points to a mystery that, to stay sober, I don’t need to define or resist. In Zen we say, “A finger pointing at the moon is not the moon.” The word God is a finger pointing at something we can never fully comprehend with our limited human understanding. - Laura Burges
