Many Zen meditation halls have a wooden board with this line on it: Don’t waste your life! The board is strategically placed where all those entering the meditation space can read it. Our lives a made up of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years. How are you using your life during those moments? Some people make the most of their lives but others, sadly, do very little. Some people steer while others merely drift. One way to avoid living a wasted life is by committing yourself to being of benefit to all beings. Positive actions always lead to positive ends. Healthy eating not only produces a healthy body but also improves mood. Releasing bitterness and resentment leads to inner-peace. Regular exercise strengthens the body while simultaneously relieving stress, anxiety and depression. Surrounding your self with a few spiritual friends increases your determination to evolve. Expressing gratitude leads to fewer depressive symptoms. Being a positive influence draws people closer to you because they enjoy your energy. Smiling not only lifts your mood but changes the mood of others for the better. If our goal is happiness and health, these kinds of positive actions must be understood as leading us along the right path. - Victor M. Parachin

In these contentious times, our words—public and private—can wound or heal. I see this in relationships, in society, and in the sangha. Learning the hard way, I have come to understand that what each of us hears is not necessarily what the speaker might have meant. If speech is a karmic activity, so too is listening. - Alan Senauke
