A recent study on people who struggle with Bulimia Nervosa (binge eating followed by compensatory behavior such as self-induced vomiting) revealed that the practice of yoga is an effective intervention.  Specifically, the study noted these three key findings:
  • Yoga significantly reduced pre-meal negative affect compared with routine treatment
  • Yoga also reduced post-meal negative affect
  • Anxiety in the study group decreased significantly when compared to the control group
Other eastern spiritual practices were also found to be helpful such as meditation, guided imagery and mindfulness.

Ryan Martinez has been teaching yoga for nearly a decade.  He recently asked - and discovered - the number #1 reason people quit yoga.  Here it is:  a perceived lack of time.   Mr. Martinez then offers these two insights to combat and defuse this perception.

1.  Make yourself a priority.  "
Identify what is important AND urgent for you to accomplish in your day. Anything that will not cause a significant impact to your finances, job security, health or relationships should not be considered urgent. You should make sure you are at the top of this list. Period. You should be a top priority in your life. Then, identify what is important but NOT urgent."

2.  Schedule your practice.
"Schedule your practice. Write your practice time on your calendar or in your phone like you would any other appointment. Use our app to sign in to class and once you have it written down and scheduled, commit to it."

He concludes by reminding yogis that "staying with a consistent practice is no easy task, but it is one of best things you can do for your overall health and wellbeing."
