Where do people spend the most time? The workplace! If awakening is to be something more than the exclusive preserve of hermits and monastics, it has to be expressed in the work that we do. - Lewis Richmond

A long lost profession is that of a lamp lighter. Most European cities employed such individuals to light candle or gas lamps as the sun began to set. This provided citizens with safety while walking streets after dark. With the introduction of electricity, the lamp lighting profession ceased to exist.
However, the symbolism is compelling. Communities still need women and men dedicated to lighting the lamp of hope where there is despair, compassion where there is suffering, love where there is abandonment, courage where there is fear. Such spiritual lamp lighters bring people safety, security and stability as they navigate through their times of darkness.

"Success is the conventional goal of work life—to complete the project, to secure the promotion, to make the big sale, to improve profits. Conventional wisdom holds that success is what we all desire, and that when we are successful, we will be contented, relaxed, and calm. Of course, success is cause for celebration. And it often leads to feelings of contentment and ease. However, in the work world, as well as in life, success can be fleeting. This year’s profit is next year’s loss. The promotion brings with it a host of new problems. The sought-after new client changes his mind.
From a spiritual standpoint, there is a different kind of success, one that does not come and go with the changing winds of the marketplace but stays with you, because it is within you. This is accomplishment. . . True accomplishment is not about winning, acquiring, or being on top. It is about sharing, giving, and including. -Lewis Richmond

In their book, Yoga Over Forty, authors Nancy Phelan and Michael Volin observe: “Everyone has two ages: a numerical age and a physiological age. Numerical age is the number of years since birth, and there is nothing we can do about it; but physiological age, which is manifested by the condition and appearance of the body, can be arrested, even to a certain extent reversed, by ordinary men and women of the West through the serious practice of yoga.”
