The sound of a bell ringing can be heard in many Buddhist monasteries and centers summoning monks for an event - chanting, meditation, a dharma talk, meals. Bonsho is the Japanese word for bell and it is used for a variety of reasons. These four are the most common uses of a bonsho:
1. To symbolize the voice of the Buddha reminding monastics enlightenment is possible;
2. To designate the beginning or end of a session;
3. To keep the mind focused during meditation;
4. To represent the presence of compassion and wisdom.
Buddhist bells are carefully made by master bell-crafters who ensure they carry a beautiful, deep, resonant sound. They can be plain or decorated with auspicious symbols.
