It is really quite simple. Whatever we put our mind on, that is what we know.  We are not obliged to think negative thoughts, yet we constantly do. It is another of our human foibles. We put our mind on such matters, which are bound to make us unhappy. Even though we already know that doing this will make us suffer, we still do it.
Perhaps we should contemplate why we think in ways we know perfectly well will create unhappiness?  The more clearly we see into our inner processes, the easier it will be to discard those that are not helpful, that do not lead to calm and contentment.
