While writing a magazine profile on Fred Rogers, an ordained Presbyterian minister, and long time host of the popular children’s television program Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, Tom Junod described a time when Roger’s visited with a 14 year-old boy who had cerebral palsy. The boy’s condition often made it impossible for him to walk or even talk clearly. After their visit, Mr. Rogers asked the young teen to pray for him. The youth was both shocked and touched. Shocked, because he was accustomed to being the object of prayers many times. Touched, because the famous as Mr. Rogers asked him for prayers.

Junod complimented Rogers on for his clever way of boosting the boy’s self-esteem, was surprised when Rogers said he didn’t see the situation that way at all: “Oh, heavens no, Tom! I didn’t ask him for his prayers for him; I asked for me. I asked him because I think that anyone who has gone through challenges like that must be very close to God. I asked him because I wanted his intercession.”
