All beings fear death and they all fear the pain of a club. Think how do they make you feel? Then do not kill and do not club; live peacefully with all beings and do not add to the violence of this world. Harm no one. - Dhammapada

A man was in a hospital bed when a nurse came in to check on him. They were both wearing protective masks due to Covid 19. The man asked the nurse a question but, because he was wearing the mask, she couldn't quite hear what he said so she asked him to repeat the question.
"Are my testicle black?" was the question the nurse heard. She became visibly concerned because, if that was true, something was terribly wrong. Quickly she lifted up his hospital gown, examined the are closely while holding his penis with one hand and his testicles with the other.
"There doesn't seem to be anything wrong, sir," she told him.
The patient removed his mask, smiled at her, and said very slowly: "Thanks for that. It was very nice. but listen very, very carefully - are-my-test-results-back?"

Giving protection from fear means actually doing whatever you can to help others in difficulty.
It includes, for instance, providing a refuge for those without any place of safety, giving protection to those without any protector, and being with those who have no other companion.
In particular, it refers to such actions as forbidding hunting and fishing whenever you have the power to do so, buying back animals on the way to slaughter, and saving the lives of dying fish, worms, flies, and other creatures.
The Buddha taught that, of all relative good actions, saving lives is the most beneficial.
