While it is easy to love the lovable, it may be the unlovable who need our love more. - Thich Nhat Hanh
You can look at the winter solstice in two ways. One, that it is the darkest day of the year (which might seem a little depressing); or, two (and this is the way my mom liked to think of it), that it is the return of the light. She actually threw winter solstice parties, as have pagans since god knows when. This ritual of celebrating light in the darkest time of year was appropriated by Christianity, which is why Christmas happens when it does, to line up with all the other festivities already in progress—never mind that Jesus is said to have been born in the summer. - Taylor Plimpton
See yourself in others. Then whom can you hurt? What harm can you do? - The Dhammapada Buddhist nuns in the northern city of Tianjin have sent a Christmas gift to the nuns at a nearby Catholic church, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reports. The Buddhist Lianzong Temple “offered cabbage, rice, flour, cooking oil, and other food stuffs along with 2,000 yuan (US$290) in cash” to the nuns of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, according to the SCMP.
“The living conditions of the nuns at the church are poor, but they persist in spreading the Gospel and stay devoted to charity,” the temple wrote on the social media site Weibo. “We are all people of faith and we will work jointly to purify hearts, promote our values, and benefit all people.” While the Lianzong Temple is larger than its Catholic counterpart, the SCMB notes, the Buddhist group has also been short on funds in recent years. Asking questions is healthy. However, I believe that spiritual practice is more about holding questions than finding answers. Seeking one correct answer often comes from a wish to make life-which is basically fluid-into something certain and fixed. This often leads to rigidity, closed-mindedness, and intolerance. - Thubten Chodron
