I've always felt (and experienced) that most advice is worthless and comes from those with subtle motives. So, I was pleased to read this advice about advice from actor Michael Caine:
“An awful lot of advice is not worth hearing. People will give you advice at the drop of a hat: people who don’t really know you, people who don’t really know what they’re talking about, people who are really giving themselves advice, not addressing your or your problems. . . The best and most thoughtful critics will sometimes say some helpful things, but so many of them are so wrong so much of the time that on the whole I would advice tasking criticism from your trusted circle, and from yourself – I am my own most severe critic – and ignoring the rest.” Mindfulness is my basic meditation practice. Mindfulness means dwelling in the present moment and becoming aware of everything – both the positive and negative elements that are there both within us and around us. We learn to nourish the positive and to recognize, embrace and transform the negative. - Thich Nhat Hanh

Guidance from Deepak Chopra:
1. As soon as you notice that you are distracted, find a quiet place where you can be alone. 2. Sit with eyes closed and take a few deep breaths or sighs. 3. Place your attention in the center of your chest in the region of the heart. 4. Continue to breathe normally for a few minutes until you feel calm and centered once more. The trick is repetition. You need to center yourself as many times a day, or an hour, as you need. Need is indicated by feeling bored, sad, anxious, angry, or dull. |
